The Roomless Gap

Hours that exist without a room

Checkout until the next movement. Luggage, heat, children, no shower, no workspace. Surfaced, not solved — Stays and Things to Do own the pick.

    Unchecked mitigations
    • Late checkout3h 54m · $85

Keep the room into the afternoon. The gap shrinks; you keep a private place to rest.

    • Luggage storage1h 36m · $12

The hours still exist without a room, but they stop being a bag-drag. Not a replacement for a room.

    • Day-use room6h · $140

A shower, a bed, a door that closes. The instrument does not book it — Stays does.

    • Lounge or low-friction activity2h 18m · $45

Not a room. A chair, a socket, a bathroom. Surfaces the gap; Things to Do owns the pick.

Buy-Back Time

Ranked levers. Never “book this.”

Hours recovered and dollars per hour so the traveler can decide. Getting There, Stays, and Things to Do remain the owners of the booking.

  1. 01+6h late checkout

    $14.17/h recovered

Hold the room through the afternoon. The Roomless Gap shrinks. Stays owns the booking.

    Extra $85 · 6h

  2. 02+5h day-use room

    $28/h recovered

A door, a shower, a place to put the bags down. Not a hotel night.

    Extra $140 · 5h

  3. 03+3h closer airport

    $15/h recovered

A nearer departure field cuts the origin transfer. Not always cheaper in fare; often cheaper in usable hours.

    Extra $45 · 3h

  4. 04+2h 15m luggage storage

    $5.33/h recovered

Does not create a room. It stops the gap from being a bag-drag, which is the difference between walking and waiting.

    Extra $12 · 2h 15m

Stays

Method plate

What is counted. What is not.

Formulas

  • Time away = return-home − leave-home (absolute, TZ-aware)
  • Door-to-door = scheduled ± pre/post buffers
  • Sleep = stay nights × sleep hours, clipped to the room, minus overnight credit already inside movement
  • Roomless = checkout → next movement, if ≥ 0.75 h
  • Unavailable = sleep + roomless + recovery + admin + fixed
  • Usable = max(0, time away − movement − unavailable)
  • Cost / usable hour = trip cost ÷ usable hours (undefined at 0)

Assumptions

  • Sleep defaults to 7.5 h from 23:00 local. Adjustable. Labeled “not freely usable,” never “wasted.”
  • Overnight transport may credit a portion to sleep so the hours are not counted twice.
  • Recovery and admin are placed into remaining free time after movement, sleep, and the gap.
  • User buffer overrides never disappear. House defaults stay on this plate.
  • Zero usable still shows the full arithmetic. The instrument fails closed on invented hours.
